University of Iloilo Teatro Busilak – Sugidanon sang walo ka giti

Teatro Busilak of University of Iloilo presents “Sugidanon sang walo ka giti”. A dark theatrical comedy about a women written by KJ Hautea and JC Hortillosa. The play was directed by Kharlle Joehn Hautea. At first, the play can be easily mistaken as the Hiligaynon counterpart of “Vagina Monologues” but the director strongly disagrees. The play is actually based on Panayanon Literature that’s known for having “mature” content.
However the Teatro Busilak is currently facing a crisis. With the University’s withdrawal of funding to their group. They have no choice but to finance their plays with their own pocket. Let us help them with any way that we can by supporting their act and give some donation to keep the group going.
The play starts off with a folk tale about a King and Queen having difficulty having children. They consulted a shaman to remedy their fertility problems. The royal couple rejoiced when they find themselves expecting a child. Alas, the Queen finally gave birth to eight children which comes in a form of female “organ”. The king was furious that he drew his sword and slew them all except for one. The one that lived went on and was found by a man whose love for her transformed her into a woman.
Sugidanon sang Giti intro (Warning not suitable for minors)
“Sugidanon sang Giti” tackles the social issues that women currently suffers from. The play is divided into 8 parts.
Comfort Woman – This act is darker and serious among the other act as the actress delivered a tragic monologue about her ordeal at the hands of Japanese soldiers.
Maguindanao Survivor - This act first started off as serious monologue but I was greatly surprised at the comedic twist. Kudos to the director and writers for coming up with something with twisted humor. Nobody could possibly make a humor about something so tragic. Pure genius!
Sakop Ko Sila Tanan – I was thinking that the play has having technical problems as the director and the crew were shouting at the actor who was no show. Turns out it was part of the act as the actor showed up in gown and made a grand entrance. The actor delivered a monologue about being gay and yearns for equal treatment. This act is definitely one of my favorites.
Rehas nga Tuktukon – This act for me greatly defines female empowerment although it may sound so wrong. How tragic it is that your husband cheats on you and with your sister. Shocking isn’t it? I love how they managed to creatively present the scenario that had us all rolling on the floor with laughter. Personally for me, this is the highlight of the play and the scene stealer!

Mali Mali – This monologue takes us on a sexual journey of a woman. She started off as a hopeless romantic who thought she had found the one she would spend the rest of her life with but then her married life took a tragic turn. She then finds comfort in unlikely lover.
Advertising – Most girls can relate to this act as the actress delivered a monologue about male chauvinism. Women just had to deal with this in some part of their lives. Men have always been exhausting their resources just trying to get the attention of women in a shallow way.
RH Bill – For me, this is the weak part of the play since I was hoping for more witty dialogues after totally loving the previous acts. Maybe they can re-order this one right after the “Comfort Woman”, that way it won’t get compared with its predecessors.
Working Girl – Due to time constraints, this act has been skipped so I can’t make a commentary on this.
There you have it, my own personal take on the “Sugidanon sang Walo ka Giti”. The Teatro Busilak are truly a passionate group of thespians who has genuine love for their craft. While they lacked support from their school, it may be of advantage to them since they wouldn’t be subjected to censorship which is common in other religious school theatre troupe. Can you imagine other religious school theatre groups doing the same thing? Que horror! They’ll probably stick with generic and mediocre plays. However, I remain optimistic that in due time, Teatro Busilak’s effort will be recognized by their school.

Wow. This is really touching! Thanks for watching the play and supporting us Teatro Busilak. Making people laugh and think about reality, and enlighten them to do something is has long been our advocacy. If it’s not real, and it’s not Hiligaynon or promotes our rich Panayanon Heritage, we won’t stage it. I’m glad to know, after three long years of hard work someone finally heard us.
