St Anne Parish – Molo Church Iloilo

Saint Anne’s Parish, also known locally as the Molo Church is considered as one of most beautiful churches in Western Visayas. Known to be the as the only gothic church outside Manila. The solemn and ethereal fixtures of the church makes it ideal for the sacred matrimonial vows.
The church was constructed in 1831 under the supervision of Fray Pablo Montano. White corral rocks were used for the construction. The two belfries houses 30 different sizes of bells from small bells to the big Campaniles. Two painters who were commissioned to paint the murals of the church interiors were Mariano Mabunay and Jesue Huervas. The two murals inside the church depicts the Crucifiction and Resurrection of Christ.
Inside the church there’s two rows of female saint statues. Each rows are comprised of 8 statues. The saints are Sta. Marcela, Apolonia, Genoveva, Isabel, Felicia, Ines, Monica, Magdalena, Juliana, Lucia, Rosa de Lima, Teresa, Clara, Cecilia, Margarita and Marta. The main altar houses the statue of Sta. Ana and her child the blessed Mary. Above them perched the statues of the Holy Trinity.
Throughout the years, the Sta Ana church withstood the test of time. Numerous earthquakes failed to topple it down. It even became an evacuation center during World War 2. Unfortunately one of the original towers was destroyed when American forces gunned down the machine guns nest of the Japanese.
