Salakayan Festival 2009 experience

I heard about the Salakayan Festival but I never got around to check it out nor had any interest. But this time I did managed to witness the festival in Miag-ao. It was a spur of the moment decision to go there and it was actually my first time to step foot in Miag-ao plaza. When I arrived in Mia-ao, I’ve only got 300 pesos in my pocket, so no tickets for me. I thought I was lucky that here’s few people and I was able to secure great spot or so I thought…

What I didn’t count on was the spot I was in was the exit for the perfroming tribes. After the tribe performance, the places gets cleared for exit and we get squashed in the process. Pity for the kids though who finds themselves trapped.

You’ll forget the bad stuff once you get to see the performance of the tribes. After all, why would everyone still endure the crowd, the heat and everything year after year. It was all worth it. But for me, next time I’ll get some seats for optimal experience.

While the food fest was a bit modest compared to food fest I’ve been to, the food was much affordable. The chicken “Inasal” with rice costs 50 pesos. Other stalls weren’t available to serve since it’s only 11 am. I find Miag-ao cleaner and more organized, but sadly I wasn’t able to stay longer since I had another event to attend to. I feel bad about missing out on the Higantes parade. I’ll be more prepared when I’ll attend the next Salakayan festival.

For the first time I saw the Miag-ao church and it’s uniquely baroque facade. I used to see the church in postcards and photos. But it looks even more breathtaking up close. Hard to believe that eggwhites were actually used to cement the stones together. Unesco listed the church as a heritage site. I’ll try to find time to visit Miag-ao and get to know more about the place better.
