Miagao Church Photo Gallery – World Heritage Site in Iloilo

The Miagao Church was declared by UNESCO as World Heritage site on 1993. Only four Baroque churches in the Philippines were included at the World Heritage list.

The construction of the church was led by Fray Francisco Maximo Gonzales in December 1786. The stones were quarried all the way from Sitio Tabog, San Joaquin. Believe it or not, eggwhites were used to glue the stones together. The construction of the church was finished in 1797.

The Baroque Church’s facade was embellished with

a relief sculpture of St. Christopher carrying the Sto. Nino. The Coconut tree, papaya and guava tree backdrop gave the church a uniquely Filipino identity.

The solid structure of the Miag-ao church enables it to survive strong earthquakes and storms. However, the church was burned during the revolution against Spain and the Japanese Occupation during World war II.

On 1945, the Miag-ao church was reconstructed by the townsmen led by Reverend Father now Msgr. Wenceslao Enojo as the Parish Priest. The complete restoration of the church was led by Msgr.Fernando Javillo on August 1959.
