Masskara Festival – Bacolod Festival

The “Masskara Festival” or “Mask Festival” is the popular tourism event in Bacolod. Held every 3rd week of October. The word “masskara” was coined by late artist Ely Santiago by combining the word mass (many) and cara (spanish word for face).

The festival highlights is the Masskara street dance competition where competing groups dons colorful mask and costumes. Aside from the street dance, there’s Masskara Queen pageant, Trade fairs, concerts and other side events.

History of Masskara

The Masskara festival first started in 1980 to cheer up the gloomy ambience of the city. Group of local artists, civic groups and local government unit decided to come up with the festival to instill esprite de corps among the people.

It was the time when the province of negros was undergoing sugar crisis. The introduction of sugar substitute from United States devalued the local sugar production. To make matters worst was the tragic sinking of vessel Don Juan after it collided with the tanker. Many prominient Negrenses families perished as the Don Juan vessel sank.
