Iloilo Sinamba sa Paraw Regatta 2011
Sinamba sa Paraw Regatta is formerly known as Samba de Regatta. Quite frankly I prefered the latter since with its easier name recall. It’s definitely one of the most anticipated dance competition in Iloilo with sizzling hot dancers in their rio inspired exotic garb. Plus there’s few bloopers that made the night quite interesting. The good news was announced the prizes going to be bigger. Then by next year more groups are expected to join. We’ll see next year if there’s new group that will join.
Grupo del Oeste won this year’s Sinamba sa Regatta. Their dazzling underwater themed performance ensures them of the spot. Grupo Fuerte Baile’s kasadyahan dance routine really cost them their bid for championship spot. Meanwhile Grupo Mesa Latino still retain their 1st runner up place since last year despite moving from Mandurriao National High School to Lapaz. Choreographers should wisened up a bit next time not to get carried away with too much props and focus instead on dancing.

Grand Champion – Grupo del Oeste of West Visayas State University
1st Place – Grupo Mesa Latino of Lapaz National High School
2nd Place – Grupo Las Brillas of Iloilo City National High School
3rd Place – Grupo Fuerte Baile of Fort San Pedro National High School
Grupo del Oeste – Best in Music, Best In Choreography, Best in Over all Performance
Grupo Mesa Latino – Best in Float
Grupo Las Brillas – Best In Parade
Grupo Fuerte Baile – Best in Production Design and Costume
Sinamba sa Paraw Regatta 2011 – Las Brillas
Las Brillas started off with all male ensemble before the female dancers joined in. They presented sizzling and colorful dance number. Strangely the male dancers wore headdress that’s similar to the ones used in dinagyang.

Grupo Fuerte Baile presented a Kasadyahan type of dance routine. It seems that they deviated away from their Samba Roots. Will this change gets in the of way of nabbing this year’s championship? Unfortunately their grand finale’s fireworks knocked out the power of the venue.

I’ve been rooting for Grupo del Oeste since last year. For me, their group still manages to keep the samba roots without letting the props get in the way. I love their “under the sea” themed dance routine. I hope they’ll win this year. It was quite a surprise that the talented girl dancer from Grupo Misa Latino is now with Grupo del Oeste.

Like Grupo Fuerte Baile, the Group Misa Latino presented a Kasadyahan type of dance routine. However they managed to present their act with exotic dance moves and elegant props. It was unfortunate that their float caught fire! Nonetheless, they carried on with their performance.

WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY is really impressive, from fishes ,jellyfish etc. to the steps.They really mastered their routine and their finale is very colorful.. I hope they’ll win this year. And to the rest of the groups you’ve done a great job, you are all champions.

if i heard it right, it was grupo fuerte baile who was 1st runner up…followed by mezza latinoand then las brillias…thank you very much for the critiquing…i believe everybody did their very best…amu lang na, may gadaug kag may pirde..last year, we knew our faults and we learned from that…Winning is great after 2 championship crowns (2008 & 2009), sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose which GRUPO DEL OESTE had last year (2010). Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday. And yes, GRUPO DEL OESTE did it, SINAMBA SA REGATTA GRAND CHAMPION 2011.
