Iloilo Filariasis Mass Drug Treatment
I used to think that Filariasis or commonly known as Elephantiasis, was just one those tropical parasitic disease that existed only in textbooks. Filariasis is an infectious tropical disease which is caused by threadlike filarial roundworms. The parasitic worm can be transmitted via mosquitoes that carries the live microfilariae. Once inside the body, the gravid female worm will expell thousands of microfilariae. There’so early signs of symptoms unless if the individuals gets blood test. One will notice that there’s an infection when certain parts of their body enlarges.
When we got alerted that there’s a reported case of infection in Lambunao and Molo, the news was quite alarming. In fact my sister was already doing preventive measures like rubbing anti mosquito lotion on her skin. Thankfully, our baranggay officials were giving Prophylaxis drugs against filariasis for every household. The drugs came in 1 large and 5 small oral tablets. I’m relieved that they didn’t use the injectibles since until now needles still scares me. Now I can have some good night sleep without worrying about having enlarged body parts populated by worms.
Anyway if you haven’t availed of these drugs, you can head straight to the Iloilo City Health Office (CHO). Remember, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
