Dinagyang Controversy – Tribu Modelian copies Tribu Paghidaet of Iloilo

One of the controversies circulating around the blogosphere is the alleged plagiarism of Tribu Modelian from Tribu Paghidaet’s Dinagyang presentation as posted by blogger Tim Libunao.
To the Dinagyang fans’ awe: I was flaming with anger and disbelief of what i saw, a contigent from Tondo, Manila is performing a cheap copy of Tribu Paghidaet’s routine performed last year (2008) in Aliwan. Worse, this copycat group claims to come from a legitimate festival. Wow, imitation they say is the highest form of flattery, but copying the whole routine which is the brain child, the intellectual property of Tribu Paghidaet’s choreographer is not a simple imitation, it’s a theft… an art theft. This is so far the grandest art theft I saw being showcased in the grandest festival of the Philippines.
LAKBAYAW FESTIVAL’S ROUTINE IS SO FAR THE CHEAPEST AND THE WORST FORM OF ART I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.

Personal Views
There’s nothing wrong with getting “inspiration”, but to copy something so blatantly is pure laziness. There’s no creativity and not even a thought process was involved. Whoever is in charge of Tribu Modelian, try to at least come up with something original. Exercise some creative liberty and redeem yourselves from being labeled permanently as “pirated” version of Tribu Paghidaet. The authorities should penalize the Lakbayaw Festival committee as well as Tribu Modelian to discourage any further plagiarism.
What really bothers me the most is the mud-slinging in the youtube comment section. It’s one thing to call out on the plagiarism but the topic then shifted to a heated debate between Sinulog and Dinagyang. Aliwan festival was meant to unite the nation. We’re not in a battle which is the best among the rest, it’s about appreciating the diversity of our culture. I guess some people have too much time to engage in unflattering exchange of views than do something productive. Why can’t they be just civil and acknowledge that each festival has their own unique charm.

thanks for posting my advocacy. by the way, Tribu Modelian’s second version of Tribu Paghidaet’s performance was showcased in Lakbayaw Festival 2010 in Tondo this January 2010 and not in Aliwan Fiesta 2010 as you have indicated…
thanks again.
