Dinagyang 2011 Ati-Ati Tribe Competition

After months of preparation, Dinagyang 2011 is set be bigger than ever. In fact Miss Dinagyang Pageant was hosted by celebrity hunk Derek Ramsay. However, the Dinagyang committee needs to improve in organizing their media ID. I hope that next time things will go smoothly. I’m very much grateful that the committee recognized the Iloilo Bloggers contribution in promoting the event and the fees for ID were waived.
On Sunday morning, I went to stage 3 early to secure my seat on the media area. I was very much excited for the Ati-ati Tribe Competition to start. Tribu Himal-us was the first tribe to perform on Stage 3 Area. I have this sinking feeling that they were quite new at this. The choreography was off and some members forgot their routine. Unfortunately, one tribe member forgot to put on his headdress. It was a bad start for them but at least the commentators take it as a comic relief. (I know there’s a typo on the image below).

As much as I would love to make a commentary on all fourteen tribes but I’ll focus on the top five tribe for their exceptional performance.

Tribu Pan-ay delivered a vibrant performance with elaborate props to back them up. Their performance was so dynamic that if you blink, you missed out on a lot of stuff. It was challenging to capture their every movement. At the start of their performance, they don bright emerald green tribal costumes. As their performance heats up, another costume change occured and this time wearing vibrant red costumes. It was interesting seeing the ati warriors clash with the babaylans.

Tribu Paghidaet was last year Dinagyang Champion as well as Aliwan Festival in Manila. Everyone held their breath as they eagerly await what the tribe has in store for them. As always, Tribu Paghidaet gave solid performance. Their theme is about the ati warriors who fought a giant serpent to save their comrade. Unfortunately, their winning streak was put to an end by Tribu Pan-ay. I’m guessing that their emphasis on theatrical performance cost the tribe’s championship slot. Then again it’s just my opinion.

Tribu Bola-Bola did their best to reclaim the championship that was once theirs. But it proves to be challenging with Tribu Pan-ay and Tribu Paghidaet getting in their way. Their ati warrior versus giant bats dance performance secured them the 2nd runner up spot at the Ati-ati Tribe competition. Hopefully next year they will have another shot at it.

Tribu Salognon is keeping their performance uniquely organic and raw as they shied away from colorful costumes and elaborate gimmicky set-up. The ati warriors dons grass skirts and headdresses made of native materials. I really like their reptilian themed performance which has this exotic feel to it. They managed to keep their performance level high and maintained being on the top 5 tribes in Dinagyang. I’m pretty sure they’ll have a strong chance in winning if their performance will go up a notch next year.
Tribu Manduryaw decides to give Ati competition a try after participating in Kasadyahan for few years. Their dance routine depicts ati warriors fighting the crocodile and their conversion to christianity. They certainly managed to nab the 4th place in Dinagyang Ati-ati tribe competition. Who knows, if they have more tricks in their sleeves they just might get a chance to win next year.
